Tinubu Hails Obasanjo’s Enduring Legacy as Former Leader Turns 89

President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid tribute to former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as the elder statesman marks his 89th birthday.

Tinubu praised Obasanjo’s enduring influence in Nigeria, across Africa, and globally, describing his contributions to public service and democratic development as significant.

The President’s message was contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday in Abuja.

Tinubu highlighted Obasanjo’s courage and sacrifices in service to the nation, recalling that he served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1976 to 1979 and peacefully handed over power to a civilian administration in 1979.

The President also noted Obasanjo’s tenure as Nigeria’s first civilian leader in the Fourth Republic, serving from 1999 to 2007.

He commended the former leader’s historic roles, including his efforts to preserve Nigeria’s unity and his advocacy for democratic governance.

Tinubu also acknowledged Obasanjo’s imprisonment for opposing military rule, as well as his continued contributions to advancing Africa’s political and economic interests.

“As Chief Obasanjo turns 89, we recognise the zeal and wisdom he continues to bring to Nigeria’s development,” Tinubu said.

The President further commended Obasanjo’s intellectual contributions through books and public commentary on national and international issues.

Tinubu prayed for continued good health, strength, and wisdom for the former President as he continues to serve the nation and humanity.
