New Lagos Speaker Meranda Visits GAC for Guidance and Support

One day after her election as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda on Tuesday visited the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) to brief them on developments at the House and seek their blessings.

The GAC, the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, hosted Meranda and other members of the Assembly at the Lagos House, Marina.

Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, was elected Speaker on Monday following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, whose 10-year tenure ended after over two-thirds of the 40-member House voted to remove him over alleged misconduct and other offences.

Previously serving as Obasa’s deputy, Meranda is now the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Obasa, representing Agege Constituency I, had been a member of the Assembly since 2007 and became Speaker in June 2015. His tenure ended abruptly in January 2025.

Abiodun Tobun, a member representing Epe Constituency I, told reporters that the decision to impeach Obasa was unanimous.

“The Constitution gives the House the authority to regulate its proceedings. Members decided they had endured enough and agreed that Hon Mojisola Meranda Lasbat would become the new Speaker,” Tobun explained.

He added that the move was necessary to restore the “sanctity” and “integrity” of the House.

“We owe our constituents and Lagos State a duty to ensure that the dignity and reputation of this House are upheld,” he said.
