Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, Mr Jim Ovia, CFR, has been admitted to the prestigious Freedom of the City of London in a ceremony held at the Mansion House on Monday, 7 April 2025.

The historic honour, which dates back to the 13th century, is a symbolic recognition of individuals who have made significant contributions to the city or society at large. While it once conferred certain privileges on freemen, it now serves as a ceremonial accolade acknowledging exceptional achievement.

Ovia joins a distinguished list of recipients including Nelson Mandela, Bill Gates, Sir Winston Churchill, Desmond Tutu, Harry Kane, and Morgan Freeman.

Reacting to the recognition, Mr Ovia said, “This is not just a personal honour but a tribute to the collective efforts of the Zenith Bank team. I dedicate it to the people of Nigeria and Africa, whose resilience continues to inspire me.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a congratulatory statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, described the recognition as a fitting tribute to Ovia’s immense contribution to innovation, business, and financial sector development in Nigeria.

“This honour reflects your visionary leadership and your role in advancing economic ties between Africa and the global community,” the President noted.

The event was attended by a high-profile delegation of Nigerian dignitaries including former President Olusegun Obasanjo; Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Sherrif Oborevwori (Delta), and Dr Peter Mbah (Enugu); as well as Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the Oba of Oniru, and the Obi of Onitsha, among others.

Ovia has received numerous accolades for his impact in banking, education, and philanthropy, including the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) and the National Productivity Order of Merit. He has also been honoured by Forbes Africa and received honorary doctorates from the University of Lagos and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
