Cardinals are expected to gather in Rome on Tuesday to finalise funeral arrangements for Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday at the age of 88.

The meeting will determine the exact timing of the burial, which traditionally takes place between four and six days after the death of a pope.

Although deceased popes are usually interred in St Peter’s Basilica, Francis is expected to be buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore — a location he held in high regard.

World leaders, including heads of state and government, are expected to attend the funeral.

Pope Francis’ body is currently lying in repose at the chapel of the Santa Marta guesthouse, his Vatican residence. It is likely to be moved to St Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, where members of the public will have the opportunity to pay their final respects.

According to the Vatican, Pope Francis died at 7:35 a.m. (0535 GMT) on Easter Monday following a stroke. He had led the Catholic Church for 12 years.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, he was the first pope from Latin America, the first Jesuit to hold the office, and the first to take the name Francis — in honour of St Francis of Assisi, the medieval monk renowned for his humility and simple life.

Global tributes have poured in following his death, with leaders praising his compassion and commitment to social justice.
