‘Burn Lagos, Kill Soldiers’: Court Hears Explosive Recordings in Kanu’s Trial

The trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), continued before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, with the court admitting key exhibits allegedly linking him to acts of terrorism.

Led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, the witness—identified by the code name “BBB”—presented a petition allegedly authored by former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, and addressed to the Department of State Services (DSS). The letter accused Kanu of inciting violence, terrorism, and murder through his public broadcasts.

Dated 17 June 2021, the petition was admitted into evidence without objection from the defence, led by Kanu Agabi, SAN, and marked as Exhibit PWF.

The witness read portions of the document in court, alleging that Kanu had instructed his followers to attack security operatives and seize their weapons. According to the witness, Kanu’s statements directly led to the killing of police and military personnel, arson, and destruction of public institutions such as police stations and correctional centres.

The court also admitted a written statement made by Kanu to the DSS on 17 July 2021, where he declined to make a fresh submission, citing that he had already responded to the allegations. This was marked as Exhibit PEG.

A flash drive said to contain Kanu’s broadcasts, along with a certificate of compliance, was admitted as Exhibits PWA and PW1, despite objections from the defence.

In one video clip, Kanu was seen addressing his followers from what he called “the blessed land of Biafra”, announcing the creation of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and calling for resistance against “Fulani domination”. In another, a voice identified by the DSS witness as Kanu’s was heard inciting followers to “burn down Lagos”, “attack the Murtala Muhammed Airport”, and “kill security personnel”.

The witness said the DSS had played the recordings to Kanu, who reportedly confirmed that he made them.

Several other audio and video recordings were also presented, with similar incendiary remarks allegedly made by Kanu. In one clip, he ordered a sit-at-home directive in the South-East and threatened violence against those who defied it. In another, he allegedly encouraged ambushes against military personnel and referred to Nigeria as a “zoological republic”.

A CD containing Kanu’s DSS interrogation on 17 July 2021 was also admitted into evidence as Exhibits PWI and PWI-1, despite pending objections from the defence.

Additionally, the court admitted a copy of the Federal Government’s gazette dated 20 September 2017, which formally proscribed IPOB as a terrorist organisation. It was marked Exhibit PWJ. The matter was adjourned to Thursday, 8 May 2025, for continuation of trial.
