Senate Begins Consideration of Tax Reform Bills Today
The Senate will today begin consideration of the Tax Reform Bills submitted months ago by President Bola Tinubu, following the presentation of a report by the Senate Committee on Finance.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement during Tuesday’s plenary, shortly after Committee Chairman, Senator Sani Musa, laid the report before the chamber.
Akpabio urged the committee to circulate copies of the bill to all senators to enable informed contributions during the debate.
In a broader call to action, Akpabio urged lawmakers to recommit themselves to addressing Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and economic hardship. He stressed the importance of unity, integrity, and urgency as citizens grapple with high living costs and rising insecurity.
Highlighting specific national challenges—such as energy sector instability, farmer-herder clashes, and violent conflicts in the South-East and North-West—Akpabio described these issues as “the bleeding wounds of the republic.”
He noted that the recent legislative recess, which coincided with Easter and Eid-el-Fitr, should serve as a reminder of the values of sacrifice and discipline in public service.
“The burdens on our shoulders are enormous, and no season better prepares the soul to carry such burdens than the one we’ve just passed through,” he said.
Akpabio reaffirmed the Senate’s support for the Tinubu administration, pledging to enact laws and strengthen oversight in support of national stability.
On the ongoing discourse around electoral and judicial reforms, he acknowledged citizens’ growing demand for institutional accountability, urging senators to respond with diligence and courage.
“The people are watching. The world is watching. Our constituents are watching. And history—silent but not sleeping—is watching,” he said.
