So Close, Yet So Far: Arsenal Fall to Ruthless PSG in Paris Thriller
Paris Saint-Germain booked a place in the Champions League final after a 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the second leg of their semi-final on Wednesday, sealing a 3-1 aggregate win.
Fabian Ruiz opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a powerful strike from the edge of the box at the Parc des Princes. Despite an early flurry from the visitors, PSG maintained their composure and control.
Leading 1-0 from the first leg, PSG missed a chance to double their advantage when Vitinha’s second-half penalty was saved. However, Achraf Hakimi extended the lead in the 72nd minute, effectively ending Arsenal’s hopes.
Bukayo Saka managed to pull one back late on, but it was not enough for Mikel Arteta’s side, whose European aspirations were dashed just shy of reaching their second-ever Champions League final.
PSG will face Inter Milan in Munich on 31 May. This marks their second final appearance, following their 2020 loss to Bayern Munich.
Arsenal, still without a trophy since the 2020 FA Cup, must now focus on securing a third consecutive second-place finish in the Premier League.
There was an electric atmosphere in Paris, with fans celebrating PSG’s first home semi-final victory with supporters present—unlike their 2020 win over RB Leipzig held behind closed doors.
Despite missing top scorer Ousmane Dembélé from the starting line-up due to a hamstring issue, PSG weathered early pressure from Arsenal. Declan Rice and Gabriel Martinelli both came close, while Gianluigi Donnarumma produced several key saves.
Ruiz’s goal came after a Thomas Partey clearance fell kindly for him on the edge of the area. His powerful finish marked his first goal in the competition.
Hakimi’s second came after Dembélé, introduced from the bench, teed him up with a composed pass. Saka later capitalised on a defensive lapse but failed to convert a golden opportunity moments later, ensuring PSG held on.
