EFCC to Probe Tompolo Over Alleged Spraying of Naira Notes
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says former militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, will be questioned over an alleged case of Naira abuse.
A viral video from April, reportedly filmed during Tompolo’s 54th birthday celebration, shows him dancing while a man showers him with ₦1,000 notes. The video triggered public outrage and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of laws against currency abuse.
In a statement posted on its official social media channels on Monday, the EFCC declared: “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!”
The practice of spraying Naira notes at parties is outlawed under Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, which describes such conduct as abuse and defacement of currency — punishable by fines, imprisonment, or both.
In recent months, the EFCC has ramped up enforcement against individuals found to be abusing the Naira at social events. Tompolo’s case comes on the heels of several high-profile prosecutions.
In January, sons of billionaire businessman Chief Razaq Okoya — Wahab and Raheem — were reportedly invited by the EFCC for spraying money in a music promotional video.
Other prominent figures, including socialite Idris Okuneye (Bobrisky), singer Terry Apala, and actress Iyabo Ojo, have also faced EFCC scrutiny. Comedian Ayo Makun (AY) was similarly questioned. While some, like Ojo and AY, have pledged to assist the Commission’s public sensitisation efforts, others have faced legal penalties.
Recent cases also involve TikTok influencer Murja Kunya, nightlife promoter Cubana Chief Priest — who reportedly settled with the EFCC for ₦10 million — and businessman Emeka Okonkwo (E-Money), who allegedly sprayed both Naira and US dollars at a public event.
Despite these efforts, critics accuse the EFCC of selective prosecution, suggesting that the crackdown disproportionately targets individuals with limited political influence.
