PDP Power Play: Is Wike Now Calling the Shots?
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, appears to have solidified his influence within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following the reinstatement of his ally, Samuel Anyanwu, as the party’s National Secretary.
Despite a meeting of PDP governors on Sunday aimed at resolving the party’s internal crisis, Anyanwu resumed duties on Monday and, alongside Acting National Chairman Amb. Illya Damagum, submitted the PDP’s candidate list for the upcoming Anambra State governorship election to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
INEC had earlier advised that it would only accept official correspondence from Anyanwu, following a March 21 Supreme Court ruling that upheld his position.
The move gives Wike substantial leverage over the party’s direction, especially ahead of key elections. Sources suggest that a significant portion of the National Working Committee (NWC) and the Board of Trustees (BoT) remain aligned with Wike.
Speaking to reporters in Abuja, the former Rivers State governor defended his actions. “I’m not tearing the party apart; I’m rebuilding it. Only the National Chairman or Secretary can sign INEC documents. Anything else risks legal invalidation,” he said.
He warned that any attempt to convene the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting without proper authorisation would be challenged in court.
Meanwhile, PDP governors and key stakeholders held a closed-door meeting on Sunday at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja. Attendees included serving and former governors as well as national officers. The party agreed to establish a committee, chaired by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, to chart the party’s future course.
