No Going Back: Aiyedatiwa Stays as Tribunal Tosses Out Petitions

The Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has upheld the election of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, dismissing all petitions challenging the outcome of the 16 November 2024 governorship poll.

In a judgment delivered on Wednesday and lasting over eight hours, the three-member panel led by Justice Benson Ogubu struck out the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Agboola Ajayi, who had alleged widespread irregularities and called for a cancellation of the results.

Similar petitions filed by the Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), and African Alliance (AA) were also dismissed.

Governor Aiyedatiwa, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after securing victory in all 18 local government areas, polling 366,781 votes.

With this ruling, the tribunal affirmed Aiyedatiwa’s mandate, bringing an end to the legal tussles that followed the 2024 governorship election.
