Atiku, David Mark Lead Call for Broad Coalition to Challenge APC in 2027
A group of senior leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President David Mark, has called on Nigerians to join efforts to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
The call was made on Tuesday in Abuja following a closed-door meeting convened to discuss the state of the PDP and the broader national situation.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the group urged all PDP members and concerned Nigerians to form a broad-based coalition committed to national unity, democratic values, economic recovery, security, and a resolute fight against corruption.
The communiqué stressed the importance of building alliances that align with both national and grassroots political realities in the run-up to future elections.
The group expressed deep concern over the PDP’s decline since its loss in the 2023 presidential election and the resignation of Dr. Iyorchia Ayu as National Chairman. According to them, internal divisions and a failure to adhere to the party’s constitution have caused instability and a loss of direction.
They further accused the APC-led Federal Government of undermining democratic principles by using state institutions to weaken opposition parties. The group criticised the government’s performance, citing deteriorating economic conditions, rising insecurity, and what they described as a collapse of public trust in governance.
According to the communiqué, the PDP has been significantly weakened, with many of its elected officials defecting under pressure, intimidation, and the lure of political patronage from the ruling party.
The meeting concluded with a call for urgent and deliberate steps to rebuild the PDP and restore credible, stable, and effective leadership in Nigeria.
Others in attendance included former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido; former PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus; former Niger State governor Babangida Aliyu; former Ebonyi State governor Sam Egwu; former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal; and former Cross River State governor Liyel Imoke.
This gathering adds to a growing wave of opposition realignment ahead of the 2027 elections. Key political figures such as Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi are also involved in coalition-building efforts aimed at creating a viable alternative platform for the upcoming polls.
