No Murder, But Was It Avoidable? Coroner Urges Action Against Nurse in Mohbad Case
The Coroner’s Court investigating the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has ruled out foul play or homicide.
Delivering her findings on Friday at the Magistrate Court in Ikorodu, Lagos, Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi held that while there was no evidence of criminal intent in the singer’s death, the actions of the auxiliary nurse involved were “unlawful and professionally negligent”.
The court recommended the criminal prosecution of the nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, for medical negligence, after she administered an injection to the singer without a doctor’s prescription.
“In line with Section 29 of the Coroner Law of Lagos State, this court recommends the prosecution of the unlicensed medical personnel, Felicia Ogedengbe, by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution, for unlawful medical practice and gross negligence,” Magistrate Shotobi stated.
The coroner further noted that Mohbad’s earlier petition to the police alleging assault and intimidation by music executive Naira Marley and socialite Sam Larry deserved thorough investigation, particularly in light of revelations made during the inquest.
The court also criticised Mohbad’s father for hastily burying the singer without demanding an autopsy, and blamed his wife for attempting to treat him at home rather than seeking urgent medical attention at a hospital.
The findings also pointed to the harmful influence of social media narratives, with content creators and influencers accused of misrepresenting facts during the coroner proceedings, thereby undermining the integrity of the court.
Beyond individual culpability, the coroner’s report made broader recommendations to enhance service delivery within Nigeria’s healthcare system and called for improved response mechanisms by law enforcement to protect public safety.
