FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday to Honour Buhari’s Legacy

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 15 July 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, as part of the seven-day national mourning period declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to the statement, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, following the President’s approval.

Tunji-Ojo said the holiday serves as a mark of respect for the late President’s service to the nation, his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development, and his legacy in governance.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the Minister stated.

He urged citizens to use the day to honour Buhari’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and national cohesion, in keeping with his vision for a prosperous and united Nigeria.

As previously announced, national flags are to be flown at half-mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, which began on Sunday, 13 July 2025.

The Federal Government also extended its condolences to the late President’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.

Meanwhile, Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, on Monday announced burial arrangements for the former President, who died on Sunday, 13 July 2025, in a hospital in London.

Speaking at a press briefing, Governor Radda said that following consultations with the late President’s family and close associates in London, it was agreed that his remains would arrive in Katsina by noon on Tuesday, 15 July.

He added that the burial would take place by 2:00 p.m. the same day in Daura, the late President’s hometown.
