The remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari were buried at his private residence in Daura on Tuesday, amidst an outpouring of grief, prayers, and tributes from dignitaries, family members, and thousands of mourners.

President Bola Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, President of Guinea-Bissau Umaro Sissoco Embaló, and Niger Republic’s Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine were among the high-profile figures who attended the burial ceremony.

Others present included service chiefs, captains of industry, former governors, representatives of the Chadian presidency, Islamic clerics, and other prominent personalities from within and outside Nigeria.

A joint military team honoured the late president with a 21-gun salute before his interment.

In a moving tribute, Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa read Buhari’s citation, describing his death as a profound national loss. He hailed Buhari as a disciplined and honest soldier who served Nigeria with professionalism, integrity, and selflessness.

Earlier, on arrival in Daura, a large crowd gathered to receive the body, chanting praises to Allah and praying for divine mercy for the late leader. Close family members were given a few minutes to view the body and offer final prayers.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1984 to 1985, returned to power in 2015 as a democratically elected president and was re-elected in 2019. His administration was defined by anti-corruption campaigns, infrastructure projects, and a mixed legacy on security and economic reforms.
