Is the PDP Ready for 2027? NEC Plots Comeback with Ibadan Convention
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has concluded its meeting with the party scheduling its national elective convention for 15–16 November 2025 in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
According to a communiqué issued on Thursday after the NEC meeting in Abuja, the party approved the schedule of activities and timetable for the convention. The gathering will be held to elect a new set of national officers to steer the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The NEC reaffirmed the PDP’s position as a united, stable, and focused political force determined to rescue Nigeria from what it described as the “catastrophic misrule” of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
It also directed the National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, and the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, to officially notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the time, venue, and agenda of the convention. This is in compliance with Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and the relevant INEC guidelines.
The NEC further approved the composition of both the National Convention Committee and the Zoning Committee, signalling preparations for what it promised would be a successful, transparent, and credible convention.
In addition, the PDP leadership resolved to initiate legal action to reclaim legislative seats held by members who were elected on the party’s platform but have since defected. Citing Sections 68(1)(g) and 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the NEC insisted that such defectors had automatically lost their seats, as there was no recognised division or merger within the party.
The NEC also expressed disapproval over reports of some PDP members participating in the activities of other political parties. It urged those involved to reconsider their actions and reaffirm their loyalty, stressing that dual party membership is not permitted by law.
The party reassured its members that efforts to address internal concerns were yielding results and reiterated its openness to working with other like-minded Nigerians in a united effort to end APC’s rule.
“The PDP remains the leading opposition party and the platform of choice for Nigerians who seek a people-centred government,” the communiqué stated.
The next (102nd) NEC meeting is scheduled for Monday, 25 August 2025.
