Is Justice Selective? Police Re-route Kwam 1 Case as Public Outcry Grows

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has returned the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority’s (NCAA) petition against Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as Kwam 1, to the Police Command at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

In a statement on Tuesday, Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed the receipt of the petition, which was filed after the singer allegedly attempted to block a moving ValueJet aircraft on August 5, 2025, at the Abuja airport. The incident attracted widespread condemnation, with many Nigerians demanding the singer’s immediate arrest and prosecution.

Following the incident, the NCAA wrote to the IGP and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, calling for a “comprehensive criminal investigation and the initiation of appropriate prosecution” against the singer, who is known to be an ally of President Bola Tinubu. The aviation regulator also imposed a six-month ban on the singer, warning that any local or international airline that flies him risks having its licence withdrawn.

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo also condemned the Fuji maestro’s “unruly behaviour” in strict terms, describing his actions as “unacceptable and reprehensible.”

Although Kwam 1 has since released an apology video, the recent remand of an unruly Ibom Air passenger, Comfort Emmanson, at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, Lagos, has reignited the conversation on selective justice. Many are now calling for the same immediate prosecution of Kwam 1. The police have promised to investigate the incident and ensure justice is served accordingly.
