Anambra Sacks Eight Security Operatives for Assaulting Corps Member, Orders Prosecution

The Anambra State Government has dismissed eight operatives of the Agunechemba security outfit over the assault of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Special Adviser on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, announced the decision on Wednesday at the agency’s headquarters in Awka.

Emeakayi said the government acted following reports of the incident, adding that the dismissed operatives would be handed over to the police for prosecution.

He explained that the operatives were pursuing suspected cultists on Tuesday when they assaulted the corps member—an action he described as unlawful, condemnable, and outside the agency’s mandate.

“The Soludo administration will not tolerate unprofessional conduct, brutality, or abuse of office by security operatives. Any officer found guilty of misconduct will face dismissal and prosecution,” he stated.

He said the incident would serve as a turning point in reforming the outfit and restoring public confidence in community security operations.

A viral video had earlier shown some operatives assaulting and stripping the corps member. The action drew widespread outrage, including condemnation from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

The victim’s lawyer, Cyrus Onu, demanded both prosecution of the offenders and compensation for his client.

“We have written petitions to the Anambra Government and the Attorney General of the Federation. We demand that these persons be prosecuted and that compensatory damages be paid,” Onu said, warning that further civil and criminal actions would follow if the demands were ignored.
