Paternity Row: Why Magistrate Ordered DNA for Mohbad’s Child

The Magistrate Court in Ikorodu on Tuesday ordered a Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) test on Liam Aloba, the son of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

The tests are to be conducted in accredited hospitals within Nigeria and abroad.

Magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga granted the order following an application filed by Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, who requested a paternity test. The late singer’s wife, Omowunmi Cynthia Aloba, was listed as the respondent.

The application, filed pursuant to the Family Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedure) Rules 2012 and the Magistrate Courts (Civil Procedure) Rules 2009, sought to direct the Chief Medical Officer or Chief Pathologist at the Military Hospital, Yaba—where Mohbad’s remains are kept—to provide samples for the DNA test.

Aloba argued that uncertainty over the paternity of Liam made the test imperative, noting its relevance to maintenance obligations and the child’s welfare.

At Tuesday’s proceedings, Joseph Aloba was represented by Augustine Adegbemi of Dr. Wahab Shittu (SAN) & Co., while Kabir Akingbolu appeared for Omowunmi. With no opposition from the respondent’s counsel, the court granted the application.

The court directed that:

  1. Two DNA tests be conducted in accredited hospitals, one in Nigeria and another abroad.

  2. Both parties or their representatives must be present when samples are collected.

Further hearing was adjourned to 11 November 2025.
