PDP Slams Attempt to Block Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Return to Senate

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned what it described as an attempt by the Senate to prevent Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP–Kogi Central) from resuming her duties following the expiration of her six-month suspension.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba criticised the reported action by the Clerk of the National Assembly, describing it as a calculated effort to silence the people of Kogi Central and deny them proper representation in the Senate.

He argued that the move violates the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Standing Rules of the Senate. According to him, it poses a grave threat to democracy, seeks to stifle opposition voices, and undermines women’s political participation.

Ologunagba called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio to clarify the matter and ensure fairness. He stressed that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension was unjust, contrary to Senate rules, and amounted to extreme persecution.

The PDP expressed solidarity with the people of Kogi Central and urged the Clerk of the National Assembly to withdraw the letter reportedly barring the senator. Ologunagba warned the Clerk not to allow himself to be politically manipulated or used to undermine democracy and the rule of law.

He further advised Akpoti-Uduaghan to disregard the letter and prepare to resume her legislative duties without hindrance.

The PDP also called on Senate leadership to guarantee her full reinstatement in line with her mandate as an elected senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
