NiMet Predicts Three Days of Storms, Rains Nationwide
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall across the country between Monday and Wednesday.
According to NiMet’s outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected on Monday morning over Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Adamawa and Taraba states. Later in the day, similar conditions are forecast across the northern region, with flash floods possible in Adamawa, Taraba and Gombe.
In the central region, Monday morning will bring cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine, alongside moderate rainfall in Niger, Kogi, Kwara, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Benue. Thunderstorms with moderate rains are likely later in the day.
Over the south, cloudy conditions are expected Monday morning with moderate rains in Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, followed by widespread rainfall in the afternoon and evening.
On Tuesday, the north will experience cloudy skies with sunshine intervals, alongside isolated thunderstorms and moderate rains in Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa. Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected in Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi and Taraba.
The central region will again see cloudy skies on Tuesday morning with rainfall in Kogi, Niger, the FCT, Kwara and Nasarawa, followed by thunderstorms in Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Benue and the FCT. In the south, cloudy skies with light to moderate rains are forecast over Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi and Delta in the morning, with rains spreading across the region later in the day.
On Wednesday, cloudy skies with sunshine intervals are expected in the north, with light showers in Sokoto and Zamfara in the morning. Thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected later in the day in Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi and Sokoto.
The central region will record cloudy skies with light rains in the morning across the FCT, Kogi, Kwara and Niger, followed by thunderstorms in Benue, Kwara, Kogi and Niger in the afternoon. The south will see cloudy conditions on Wednesday morning, with moderate rainfall later in the day.
NiMet advised motorists to avoid driving during heavy downpours. Farmers were cautioned against applying fertiliser or pesticides immediately before rainfall to prevent nutrient leaching.
Residents were urged to secure loose objects, disconnect electrical appliances and avoid tall trees during storms. Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather updates for effective planning.
