Police Arrest NURTW Leader Over Alleged Murder and Assault in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) over allegations of assault and murder.

The suspect, identified as 55-year-old Shamsideen Adio, popularly known as “Shameleon,” is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, where investigations into the cases are ongoing.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the Command’s Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, Adio allegedly attacked a dispatch rider on Lagos Island, using a helmet and his fists to inflict serious injuries. The victim, who was rushed to hospital, remains on oxygen and is still receiving treatment.

The police further revealed that a separate complaint had earlier been lodged against Adio over an incident that occurred on 28 August 2025. During the altercation, he allegedly struck another man repeatedly on the head and face with a metallic ring, leaving him with severe injuries. Despite receiving medical attention, the victim died on 17 September 2025, and his body has been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.

News of the man’s death sparked protests at Adio’s office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, where sympathisers of the deceased set two of his motorcycles ablaze, creating heightened tension in the area.

Concerned by the unrest, Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh personally led mobile policemen, tactical squads, and conventional officers to restore calm. He assured residents that the suspect remains in custody and will be prosecuted once investigations are concluded.

The Commissioner also appealed to residents to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing that the Command is committed to ensuring justice.
