Rivers Assembly Presses Fubara for Commissioner Nominees After Emergency Rule Ends
The Rivers State House of Assembly has urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara to submit the list of commissioner nominees to the legislature for consideration.
The lawmakers, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, made the call during their sitting on Thursday, less than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu lifted the emergency rule imposed on the state.
On Thursday’s Order Paper, the only listed item was a motion to set a legislative agenda for the remainder of the year for the 10th Assembly.
Although Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, were expected to formally assume leadership of the state on Thursday – six months after President Tinubu declared a state of emergency – they had yet to arrive at the Government House in Port Harcourt as of 4:50 p.m.
Earlier in the day, an enthusiastic crowd of supporters gathered at the Government House, waiting to welcome the governor and his deputy. State emergency service officials were also present at the venue.
Fubara and Odu had been sidelined from the governance of Rivers State for six months after President Tinubu declared emergency rule, citing a political crisis. The proclamation also suspended the governor, his deputy, and members of the House of Assembly.
The emergency rule formally ended on Wednesday. That evening, the former administrator, retired Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, who had overseen the state during the period, handed over the reins of power. In a statewide broadcast, he urged political stakeholders to embrace mutual respect and dialogue to ensure lasting peace.
