FG Reaffirms Commitment to Religious Freedom After Trump Labels Nigeria ‘Country of Concern’
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting all Nigerians, regardless of religious affiliation, in response to comments by United States President Donald Trump, who described the killing of Christians in Nigeria as a “mass slaughter.”
Mr. Trump, in a statement posted on his Truth Social platform on Friday, declared Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged persecution of Christians. He warned that Christianity faced an existential threat in Nigeria, claiming that “radical Islamists” were responsible for the killings.
“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter,” he wrote.
The US president added that America “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening,” and directed Congressman Riley Moore and House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole to investigate the situation.
In its response, the Federal Government, through a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Mr. Kimiebi Ebienfa, in Abuja on Saturday, said Nigeria “celebrates religious diversity” and remains committed to combating violent extremism.
“The Federal Government has noted the recent statement by the United States of America on religious freedom in Nigeria,” the statement read.
“We remain committed to tackling violent extremism, which is fuelled by special interests that have deepened decay and division across West Africa and the Sahel.
“We mourn all victims of violent extremism and salute our armed forces who continue to confront vicious but cowardly foes. The Federal Government of Nigeria will continue to defend all citizens, irrespective of race, creed, or religion.”
Mr. Ebienfa added that Nigeria, like the United States, draws strength from its diversity.
“Like America, Nigeria has no option but to celebrate the diversity that is our greatest strength. Nigeria is a God-fearing nation that respects faith, tolerance, diversity, and inclusion, in line with the rules-based international order.
“The US has been—and we trust will remain—a close ally. The Federal Republic of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will continue to work with all partners committed to peace, stability, freedom, and democracy,” he said.
