Penalty Heartbreak in Rabat as Super Eagles Crash Out of World Cup Race
The Super Eagles will not feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, the United States, and Mexico after losing to the Democratic Republic of Congo on penalties in a fiercely contested African play-off final on Sunday.
The match in Rabat, Morocco, ended 1-1 after normal and extra time, but the Leopards prevailed 4-3 in the shoot-out to secure Africa’s sole ticket to the intercontinental play-offs scheduled for March next year.
Nigeria had taken an early lead just three minutes into the match when midfielder Frank Onyeka scored to give the Super Eagles the advantage. They pressed for a second goal but failed to convert several opportunities. DR Congo gradually settled into the game, dictated the tempo, and deservedly equalised in the 32nd minute through Mechak Elia.
The first half ended level, but there was a surprise when Victor Osimhen did not return for the second half. In his place, Nigeria introduced Akor Adams, who plays for Sevilla, but he made little impact. Later substitutions, including Tolu Arokodare, Chidera Ejuke, and Moses Simon, also failed to change the momentum as the Leopards continued to push Nigeria back into their half.
Although DR Congo dominated large portions of the second period and extra time, their only goal in the additional 30 minutes was ruled out for a foul on goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. The Chippa United shot-stopper then made a crucial stoppage-time save to deny a late winner.
In the shoot-out, Nwabali saved two penalties, but in sudden death Semi Ajayi’s effort was stopped before Chancel Mbemba converted the decisive kick to hand DR Congo victory.
Nigeria had earlier defeated Gabon 4-1 to reach the final round, while DR Congo edged Cameroon. The Super Eagles will now shift focus to preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, due to take place in Morocco next month.
