Wike Confirms Tinubu-Brokered Peace Meeting with Fubara, Urges Rivers Assembly to Comply

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has confirmed a recent meeting between himself, Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, and President Bola Tinubu.

Mr. Wike said the meeting, held on Monday, February 9, was convened at the President’s instance amid the ongoing rift between him and the governor.

According to the minister, the intervention formed part of the President’s efforts to broker peace between Governor Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

He commended President Tinubu for stepping in and expressed optimism that the reconciliation would lead to lasting peace between the governor and the legislature.

“I remember this is the second time the President is intervening and, by the grace of God, this is going to be the last time,” Mr. Wike said after an inspection tour of ongoing projects in the nation’s capital.

“I have told the Assembly to do the needful and obey Mr. President, which I know they will not hesitate to do. I also believe the governor will carry out his own part to make sure that this is the final time Rivers people will hear this kind of discord.”

His comments came a day after reports emerged that Mr. Wike and Governor Fubara left for the minister’s lodge in Abuja following their meeting at the Presidential Villa.

On Sunday, President Tinubu met key political actors from the oil-rich state, including both men, in what appeared to be a renewed attempt to resolve the prolonged political crisis.

The closed-door meeting, reportedly attended by other Rivers leaders, aimed to address the power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Mr. Wike.

According to reports, the governor later accompanied the minister to his residence in Guzape, Abuja, a move observers described as a possible sign of temporary reconciliation.

The latest intervention marks the first since a third impeachment notice was issued against Governor Fubara by lawmakers loyal to Mr. Wike, a process that has already become the subject of litigation.

Despite the high-level talks, it remains unclear whether any fresh truce will hold.

Issues believed to have dominated discussions include whether Governor Fubara has abandoned any second-term ambition and agreed to relinquish political control of the state — demands widely associated with Mr. Wike’s camp.

It is also uncertain whether pro-Wike lawmakers will withdraw the impeachment notice against the governor.
