Plateau Killings: Governors Forum Calls for Collective Action
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has called on community leaders and influencers in Plateau State to unite the diverse ethnic groups and residents of the state to curb the ongoing wave of deadly violence.
NGF Chairman and Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, made the appeal during a visit to Plateau State on Thursday, 17 April 2025.
In recent weeks, over 100 people have been killed in attacks by armed assailants targeting communities in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, also visited the state earlier in the week and assured residents that those responsible for the heinous attacks would be brought to justice.
President Bola Tinubu has joined other Nigerians in condemning the killings. However, Labour Party leader Peter Obi criticised what he described as a government long on statements but short on action. He stressed that Plateau residents are weary of condolences and need urgent and tangible security measures.
Speaking during his visit, Abdulrazaq said: “On behalf of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the people of our respective states, I convey our heartfelt condolences over the tragic events that have claimed so many lives.
“We call on leaders and influencers across all communities and sectors in Plateau to support His Excellency, Governor Caleb Mutfwang, in the task of fostering unity and sustainable peace.
“Community leaders, including youth leaders, must speak strongly against violence of any kind. We urge all parties to resolve their differences through dialogue, fair negotiation, mutual respect, and a willingness to understand diverse perspectives.”
He warned that no meaningful development can occur in a climate of violence. “Plateau is blessed with vast potential in agriculture and tourism, but these opportunities may be lost if violence continues to shape public perception of the state.”
Abdulrazaq commended Governor Mutfwang’s efforts in managing the crisis and reiterated the NGF’s solidarity with the people of Plateau. “We pray for the repose of the souls of the victims and for peace to return to all communities,” he said.
