Opposition Bloc Seeks INEC Nod for New Party, All Democratic Alliance

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the National Opposition Coalition Group (NOCG), comprising several prominent political figures, including former Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi, has applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the registration of a new political party — the All Democratic Alliance (ADA).

The coalition, chaired by former Senate President David Mark, disclosed this development in a statement dated 19 May 2025, signed by Amaechi and Umar Ardo as Chairman and Secretary of the New Platform Committee (NPC), respectively. The application follows a series of meetings in Abuja, culminating in resolutions taken during the Committee’s meeting on 19 June 2025.

The 15-member NPC was mandated to establish the association and oversee the application process with INEC. During its recent meeting, the Committee approved the formation of ADA, adopting the party’s name, logo, slogan, motto, constitution, manifesto, and interim leadership.

Chief Akin A. Ricketts was named Protem Chairman, with Abdullahi Musa Elayo appointed as Protem National Secretary. The interim leadership was also authorised to secure office space, open bank accounts for financial operations, and commence party activities in line with the ADA constitution and the Electoral Act (2022), pending INEC’s approval.

Speculation has intensified in recent months over possible realignments among opposition figures, including former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar; 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi; and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. Their rumoured coalition aims to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC in 2027.

In May, Atiku’s spokesman confirmed ongoing discussions between these political heavyweights. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, he said: “There have been ongoing discussions between Atiku Abubakar and some opposition leaders — Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai. These talks reflect the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians.”

The APC has, however, dismissed the prospect of such a coalition unseating President Tinubu, insisting any alliance will fail.
