APC Governors Back Tinubu’s Agenda, Describe Ganduje’s Exit as Strategic

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have reaffirmed their support for President Bola Tinubu’s policies and his Renewed Hope Agenda, while describing the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as part of the party’s ongoing evolution.

The governors made the declaration in a communiqué issued at the end of a two-day strategic regional meeting of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), hosted by Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, in Benin City.

The meeting, which concluded on Friday, 28 June 2025, addressed critical issues related to Nigeria’s socio-economic trajectory, federal-state collaboration, and the APC’s strategic direction.

Reading the communiqué, PGF Chairman and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, described the meeting as “a crucial platform to harmonise development strategies, reinforce party unity, and deepen the Forum’s commitment to people-centred governance, institutional accountability, and inter-governmental collaboration.”

Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, also referenced the communiqué in a statement issued yesterday.

According to the document, the governors conducted a broad review of Nigeria’s economic, social, political, and security landscapes. They expressed satisfaction with what they termed renewed federal-state synergy, particularly around fiscal reforms, food security, energy transition, infrastructure upgrades, and the revitalisation of the social sector.

The Forum congratulated President Tinubu, describing his policies as widely endorsed across APC-led states. It also welcomed Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, into the APC, stating that his defection and that of his supporters signalled growing national acceptance of Tinubu’s transformative agenda.

While noting encouraging economic indicators, the governors stressed the need for inclusive growth, underpinned by increased investment in agriculture, job creation, MSMEs, poverty reduction, and social protection programmes.

They reiterated the vital role of sub-national governments in national renewal and pledged to deepen economic decentralisation in line with Section 13 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandates all levels of government to prioritise the welfare of citizens.

On governance and investment, the Forum welcomed increased fiscal transfers to states and growing investor confidence in Nigeria’s economic prospects, adding that several APC-led states were attracting significant domestic and foreign investment.

The governors also committed to professionalising procurement, digitising governance systems, and enhancing regulatory frameworks to deliver infrastructure that unlocks productivity and boosts inter-state competitiveness.
