Tinubu Promises Comprehensive Reform of the Police Force

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is well-trained, well-equipped, and equipped with modern technology to effectively combat crime across the country.

Speaking on Monday during the inaugural National Police Day celebrations, which marked the culmination of the 2025 Police Week at Eagle Square in Abuja, President Tinubu highlighted the importance of staying ahead of those who threaten the nation’s peace, welfare, and prosperity.

In a speech delivered by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, the president also announced that April 7 would be institutionalised as National Police Day to honour the fallen heroes of the force and celebrate the contributions of its personnel.

“As president, I reaffirm this administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare and empowerment of the Nigeria Police Force. A secure Nigeria is crucial to our collective prosperity, and this vision starts with ensuring that our police force is well-equipped, well-trained, and well-motivated,” Tinubu declared.

The president outlined measures his administration is implementing to create a more effective police force, including providing modern tools and technology, improved housing, accessible healthcare, and quality education for the families of police officers.

“We are taking decisive steps to improve your living conditions. Adequate housing, accessible healthcare, and quality education for your children are our priorities. We are also determined to equip you with modern tools and technology to enhance your effectiveness in combating crime. Moreover, we will ensure that your salaries and benefits reflect the gravity of your responsibilities and the risks you face daily. Anything less would be unacceptable,” he affirmed.

President Tinubu assured Nigerians that his government would leave no stone unturned in ensuring effective policing, safety of lives and property, and addressing internal security challenges such as banditry, insurgency, and kidnapping. He stressed that the administration remains resolute in restoring peace and security across all regions of Nigeria.

Emphasising the crucial role of the police, Tinubu described the force as the cornerstone of the nation’s security, the first line of defence against crime, and the protectors of democracy.

“Your role is indispensable, and your contributions are immeasurable. National Police Day serves to highlight your invaluable service and to honour the officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” the president added.

He extended condolences to the families of fallen officers and pledged continued support for the police force.

The president commended Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun and his team for their dedication to advancing reforms in line with the administration’s goals, emphasising that their commitment is paving the way for a police force that Nigerians can be proud of.

Earlier, IGP Egbetokun noted that the National Police Day not only commemorates the establishment of the Nigeria Police Force but also honours the fallen heroes and the outstanding contributions of officers in the field.

He highlighted ongoing reforms within the force, focused on building trust, professionalism, and respect for human rights, as well as enhancing national security.
